The Modern Game of Handball Print E-mail

by Handball Federation of Singapore

Over 15 million people play this fast-paced game in approximately 140 countries around the world. It is a wonderful mix of soccer and basketball with a few water polo tactics thrown in.

Handball is one of the fastest growing sports in Northern Asia and Africa. The fact that it is one of the 26 sports that will be competed at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games 2010 is a testament to its growing popularity.

The game of handball is fast and dynamic.  As with most other team sports, players are required to be fit and most importantly, need to know how to work effectively together as a team.

Handball is also a game of tactics, strategies and problem-solving.  As per any physical activity, this is a sport that requires thinking and the ability to excel under pressure.

Handball – An easy game for the ladies to pick up

  • Combines the skills of  running, jumping, catching and throwing into a fast-moving game
  • It is easy to pick up and it is a sport suitable for all ages

How do I play the game?

  • To score as many goals as possible in the two 30-minute halves
  • The play area is 40 metres by 20 metres, slightly bigger than a basketball  court
  • Each team consists of seven players, of which six are  field players and one is a goal keeper
  • Field Players are able to dribble the ball on the court and may only take a maximum of three steps before and after each dribble
  • Players are allowed to have body contact with their opponents but rough behaviour will result in a warning or suspension from the game
